Today was the Winter Flight 8 K in Salisbury. I have never run an 8K, but wanted a longer distance race, so I signed up. The ride down was worrisome, salt truck were every where slowing down the traffic and covering windshields with a mess.
I managed to arrive on time, get my goody bag to the car before the start and meet a couple of ladies about my age, running their first 8K. Bonnie and I hung together for the entire race, she occassionally passed me, but I quickly caught up when she took a walk break. The first mile was lots of uphill, 11:something. Bonnie hung back a little but caught me on a short down hill at the 2 mile mark, 23:23. We grabbed a cup of water and walked the huge uphill.
Mile 3 was 38:something and again, hilly. The fourth mile, lots of downhills, I got to the 4th marker at 49:something. From their, a short walk break on a steep hill, then off to the finish line.
It was a well organized race and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Especially turning into the stadium for the finish and having my name announced over the PA. I raised my hands and the announcer chuckled. I tried to sprint out the finish. As I approached, the clock read 10:23, I poured out all the energy that I had for the last few yards. Bonnie finished just about a minute behind me. Winter Flight awarded Thorlo socks to the last 170 finishers. Of course, I won a pair. It's my first race "prize."
The ride home was quick and uneventful. I sang along to some Jimmy Buffett and Janis Joplin. Great way to start a Saturday!
